Description
This capacious scrapbook documents Margaret (Peg) Alice Corson’s two years at the Skidmore School of Arts, during which time she completed a two-year Domestic Science course, as well as the months immediately following graduation, when Peg embarked on a cross-country trip to San Francisco, setting sail for China (Shanghai) on the S.S. Shinyo Maru, September 23, 1916. Comprised of programs, notes, dance cards, dried flowers, newspaper clippings, ticket stubs, pamphlets and extensive ephemera, the scrapbook captures the life of a student during the early years of the Skidmore School of Arts and hints of the adventure to come.
Local Note
Margaret Alice Corson (Peg), Class of 1916, was a Domestic Science major from Lestershire, NY. Upon graduation, she set sail for China where she became a Methodist Episcopal Church missionary, assisting the Reverend Blackstone in Nanking. In 1920, she married H. Milton Wagner, and they continued to live in China until 1926, raising two small children in Sianfu (Xi’an); they later settled in Baltimore, MD. Throughout her time in China, Peg kept up a correspondence with Dean Sarah Gridley Ross and two examples can be found here. Additionally, Peg spoke at a Vespers service on campus in 1926 and some of her remarks about her experiences are published (see "Alumnae Bulletin," February 1927, pp.4-6). Her yearbook entry (written in verse) reads:
A jolly girl you’ll all allow,
To capture men she knows just how.
With her sunny smile and breezy air,
“Peg” is welcomed every where.
