Description
This voluminous scrapbook documents Ellen Louise Baldwin’s freshman and sophomore (senior) years at the Skidmore School of Arts, during which time she completed a two-year Domestic Science course. Comprised of photographs, programs, notes, grade reports, various ephemera, and extensive and often humorous captioning, the scrapbook provides a glimpse of student life during two of the most consequential events of the early 20th century - the First World War and the Influenza Epidemic of 1918. Additionally, the scrapbook documents early freshmen initiation rituals at the school (see p.10 recto).
Local Note
Ellen Louise Baldwin, Class of 1919, was a Domestic Science major and scholarship student from Colebrook, NH. Upon graduation, she became the manager of a Tea Room in her hometown. Her yearbook entry reads: “The mystery remains that she can eat so much and still remain so small. The worried expression is generally due to those lessons or the state of her hair. But a certain letter causes the worry to fade away. She is the sweetest and best friend one could have.”
