This voluminous scrapbook documents Edith Lucile Loomis’ two years at Skidmore School of Arts, during which time she completed a two-year Domestic Science course, as well as nine months of post-graduation activities. Comprised primarily of small items of ephemera, such as dance cards, notes, newspaper clippings, ticket stubs, stamps, programs, telegrams, and a smattering of photographs, the scrapbook also contains extensive captioning, including several editorial comments by Edith.
Local Note
Edith Lucile Loomis, Class of 1921, was a Domestic Science major (Program D III) from New Britain, CT and a member of the Hockey Team (1919-1920). Her grade reports (see details pp.19 recto and 40 verso) reveal that she struggled academically at times, which may have resulted from her busy social calendar, as evidenced by the sheer number of dance cards contained in the scrapbook, and, this passion for socializing occasionally got her into trouble, including being placed under “social discipline” for six weeks during April and May of her last semester (see details p.42 recto). Her yearbook entry reads: “With joy in our hearts we hail one of the few people in the world who possesses a nickname that is absolutely suitable. ‘Chubby’ is all that her name implies—round, good-humored and full of pep, but, for some unknown reason she would like to disown herself, for her one ambition is to grow tall and slender. With all the confidence in the world ‘Chubby’ dons a blue uniform and studies the art of cookery. Now we ask you, why on earth does a person who says that her pet aversion is eating, want to learn the cook’s trade?”
