Description
This scrapbook documents Suzanne Van Antwerp Davis' freshman through senior years at Skidmore College, and contains dozens of photographs, grade reports, programs, as well as numerous song lyrics, which are typewritten and pasted down. Culminating with photographs of her "pinning" ceremony, the scrapbook provides a glimpse into the life of a nursing student in the 1950s.
Local Note
Suzanne Van Antwerp Davis, Class of 1954, was a Nursing major from Upper Montclair, NJ. Upon completion of her degree, she worked several years as a pediatric nurse; served as alumnae club president; and served on the board of the Ivymount School for developmentally delayed and autistic children and young adults in Rockville, MD, where she was board president. And, as noted in her obituary and evidenced by the variety of song lyrics pasted in her scrapbook, "Sue loved to sing and sang all the time – if there was an occasion which required a song and for which no song was appropriate, she would make one up!" Her yearbook entry reads: "A double phenomenon is black-eyed Suzan from the Garden State with a pert white cap frosting the lushest of dark tresses. The Montclair Blare, a leprechaunic delight in the practical joke—all in good fun. Say it’s time for sport, she’s oh so eager; say it’s time for work, she’s oh so efficient. The kind of nurse we dream about, a conscientious worker displaying twenty-four hour thoughtfulness. Uninhibited utterances, Spike Jones inventiveness. 'If you knew Suzie like we know Suzie;' her distinctive charm adds new meaning to an old song. A double phenomenon, concealed gentleness, revealed generosity."
