Description
This scrapbook documents Carolyn (“Patsy”) Wander’s junior and senior years at Skidmore College, and contains multiple programs, newspaper clippings, invitations as well as numerous and various communications and documents from the college. In particular, the grade reports and warnings from the Registrar’s office, which Patsy readily included, provide an unvarnished view of her struggles academically and her subsequent improvement.
Local Note
Carolyn (“Patsy”) Stewart Wander, Class of 1944, from Maplewood, NJ was a transfer (1942) from Colby Junior College, New London, NH (see “Skidmore News,” October 9, 1942, p.4), where she was a member of the Camera Club, Social Chairman of the Y.W.C.A., and Chairman of the World Service Fund. At Skidmore, she was a Fine Arts major “who [found] diversion in photography and all winter sports.” She contributed to the war effort, serving as a volunteer Air Raid Warden as part of the Saratoga Springs War Council and the War Activities Office of Skidmore College, and, as one of the first participants in the “Acceleration Program” [see “Skidmore News,” February 19, 1943, pp.1, 2 and 4 and December 1, 1943, p.1], she graduated early (December, 1943), immediately taking employment with Western Electric Company in their drafting department. Her yearbook entry reads: "Patsy . . . "My name is not Patricia.” V-mail letters every day. "Ilse.” "I wrapped up a lollypop for the Censor.” Dependable. Good for a grin at anytime. Funny books and genius. "Let’s go to Joe’s.” "I’m going to the Art Building.” Hectic room servicing. The originator of the hysterics on third floor. Tall, smooth, and talented. Independent, original thinker. Behind the milk and push cart around 8:30 a. m.”
