Description
This album documents Edythe E. Hardtmayer’s freshman through senior years at Skidmore College, as well as six years post-graduation. It is comprised primarily of photographs, and extensive coverage is given to her Outing Club activities, especially time at Skidirondack as well as Pine Log Camp, Lake Luzerne, NY, where she also worked as a counselor in 1935 and 1936. May Day festivities are also well documented, and some of the images of the downtown campus provide context to the interplay of buildings in student life. Additionally, the album documents an extended road trip (1937) she undertook with her family, traveling through Texas, Mexico, California, Nevada, Utah, Wyoming and South Dakota. (Numerous postcards from the same fill in any gaps.) Images from her first Reunion (1938) and the World’s Fair (1939) in New York round out the album. Edythe was an avid photographer, as evidenced by the number of images in this album, and, in the many depictions of her where she can be seen holding a Kodak box camera at her side.
Local Note
Edythe (“Edie”) Hardtmayer, Class of 1933, was a Public School Music major from Pittsburgh, PA who also pursued outdoor and athletic activities – she was a member of both the Outing Club and Riding Club as well as a participant in basketball and swimming. Her yearbook entry reads: “With a kind word for everyone and a pleasant smile, she moves among us. Edie is one of those unusual people who has friends in every class and among the faculty. She is the soul of generosity. Besides being a good musician with particular ability at the piano, she is an athlete, with a flair for swimming. The intense interest in studies that she displays brings enviable results.”
