Description
This album documents Arlene Magaw’s freshman through senior years at Skidmore College, as well as activities during her first three years post-graduation. It is comprised exclusively of photographs, and extensive coverage is given to her Outing Club activities – especially time at Skidirondack – as well as Skidmore Camp, which was held at Camp Mesacosa, Efner Lake, Corinth, NY. In addition, there are several pages related to her time (1931) as a counselor at Pinelands Camp, Center Harbour, NH; the Winter Olympics (1932) at Lake Placid, NY; Camp Kiniya (1934), Colchester, VT; and a canoe trip (1936) from Chesuncook Lake to Mt. Katahdin in Maine.
Local Note
Arlene (“Sandy”) Magaw, Class of 1933, was a Health and Physical Education major from Rockville Centre, NY. An active student and all-around athlete, she was awarded the Athletic Association cup along with the title of “Skidmore Athlete” during her senior year. She was also a member of the Physical Education Club; Outing Club, serving as president her senior year; Riding Club; and a member of the Soccer, Baseball, and Hockey teams to name just a few of her pursuits. Her yearbook entry reads: “Sandy is one of those persons who carry out a task to a great degree of efficiency. Her sportsmanship is unlimited. The variety of her interests is amazing. She participates in almost every campus activity; controlling the footlights, managing week-end trips. And it is said that her voice can be heard above all the rest of the chorus. Sandy’s natural enthusiasm brings her admiration.” Arlene continued her athletic and outdoor pursuits post-graduation with stints as a counselor at Camp Kiniya, Colchester, VT and Camp Blazing Trail, Denmark, ME. Additionally, she appears to have taught Physical Education in many schools, including Stoneleigh College, Rye, NH; the Lancaster, PA school systems; and the Locust Valley, NY school systems.
