Description
This album documents Ruth Elizabeth Barker’s freshman through senior years at Skidmore College as well as several class reunions up until the 1950s, and is comprised of photographs (many with hand-painted captions), a newspaper clipping, programs, and cutouts from the pages of the “Alumnae Bulletin.” The photographs include snapshots, photo collages, and beautiful camera studies of the chapel organ, various walls and ceilings, and the Studio printing press. Many of the photographs and collages from this album appear in the 1935 Eromdiks.
Local Note
Ruth Elizabeth Barker, Class of 1935, was a Fine Arts major from Montclair, New Jersey. An active student and athlete, she was a member of the Studio Arts Club; Outing Club; Hockey, Class Team; Baseball, Class Team; and Editor-in-Chief of Eromdiks to name just a few of her endeavors. Her yearbook entry reads: “VIGOROUS versatility ... a clever pun, teasing attitude . . . room piled sky-high . . . the combination of creative artistry and efficient business ability . . . afternoon chocolate at the pharm . . . dilapidated brown ski suit, Barker's business costume . . . the spry coordination of a capable athlete . . . spontaneous geniality.” Upon graduation, Ruth was hired by Skidmore as an Instructor in Fine and Applied Art, where she worked from 1935-1939. During the 1938-1939 academic year, she served as Head of Court Street House.
