CLASS NOTES June 4-6 Reunion Lise Bang-Jensen Reporter Lise Bang-Jensen ’71 and “Inside Albany,” the weekly series on the news and policy makers of New York state government seen on educational television’s WMHT, began their new season with a switch to prime time. The move followed a first-place award for broadcast reporting in the Common Cause “I Love an Ethical New York” media competition. The citizens’ lobby, which works to make government more open, honest, and accountable, commended Bang-Jensen and her co-anchor for their series of reports on the political ramifications of the 1992 redistricting process. “Inside Albany” had previously won the prestigious duPont-Columbia Award for Broadcast Journalism. Teresa Thomas Fulmer Columbia University trustees have named Terry Fulmer ’75 the first Anna C. Maxwell Professor of Clinical Research in the School of Nursing. The endowed professorship, which honors the founder of Columbia’s century-old nursing school, comes on the heels of a two-year Brookdale Fellowship that supports Fulmer’s research in gerontological abuse, cancer in the elderly, and geriatric rehabilitation. Fulmer, who earned her master’s in clinical nursing and Ph.D. in higher education administration at Boston College, has been called “one of the most distinguished clinical researchers in the country” and is a highly sought-after lecturer. worked at the Albert Schweitzer Hospital in Haiti during the summer of 1959. Gail Bendix Jaffe tells of continuing friendships that began at Skidmore. She lives near and is in frequent touch with Suzanne Elsesser and Barbara Block. Gail and Barbara and their families share Thanksgiving each year, as they have since the two were freshmen. That’s a lot of Thanksgivings! Gail and her husband, Alan, have visited at Judy Lowe Plourde’s lakehouse in Beckett, MA, which she describes as a glorious place that is nearby but worlds away. Gail also enjoys birdwatching with Barbara Brownell ’59. Dave and I have recently moved into a house we had built in Brattleboro, VT. For a while there, I thought I had a paintbrush and sandpaper permanently affixed to my hands, but slowly it is all coming together. Last summer, I enjoyed meeting Suzanne Denby Pelton for lunch each Wednesday at Farmer’s Market in Brattleboro, which is in a park right across from Suzanne’s office. Suzanne is a licensed psychologist who has a private practice along with her husband, Wally. Anne Murray is a holistic health practitioner and president of her own company, Murray Medical Inc., in Albuquerque, NM. ’61 Helen Illinger Challenger 1759 Wilder Court Dunwoody, GA 30338 Peggy Hatcher Stevens and husband “Zeus” have become permanent residents of Oakbrook Terrace, IL, after selling their house in Albany, NY. Zeus is an associate director in the Hospital Accreditation Program. He supervises the hospital administrator surveyors. Their daughter, Amie, is in Boulder, CO, in a master’s program at the University of Colorado for her degree in literature and education. Their son, Steve, is in the process of applying to law schools. Marian Renken Hjortsberg is an M.A. candidate at the U.S. International University in San Diego, CA. Derry Knight Coe’s son, Graig, graduated from Bowdoin College last May. IN MEMORIAM: Anne McLeod Fritschel died Sept. 20, 1992, in Georgetown, TX, of breast cancer. Anne was an accomplished amateur archeologist and antiques dealer. She worked at Everson Museum of Art in Syracuse, NY; and from 1972 until her death, she was a well-known antiques dealer. A talented artist, she was a volunteer art teacher. She was a Cub Scout leader and member of the Cancer Crusade for 18 years. In her spare time, she raised and trained horses. Anne is survived by her husband, Donald Fritschel; her son, Ken; and her daughter, Lynn Hogan. ’63 Ginny Nyvall Durfee 25 Allindale Way Dedham, MA 02026 I hope you are all planning to join us at our 30th reunion this June 4-6. ’67 Nancy Nims Mullins 317 Quarter Track Yorktown, VA 23693 Susan Kovage Ratzan was recently honored by the Greater Hartford Chapter of the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation as “Woman of the Year.” For the past 14 years, she has been with the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Connecticut School of Medicine, where she directs a program for children and adolescents with diabetes. Eldest son David is applying to colleges, Will is a high-school junior, Katie is a seventh grader, and Noah is a fourth grader. Susan and Rick celebrated their 24th anniversary in December. Susan Leferson recently moved to Manassas, VA, after having lived in the Virgin Islands for 17 years. She is currently a flight officer (pilot) for Air Wisconsin, flying out of Dulles Airport in Washington, DC. Susan says that life is much easier here in the continental United States; for example, she was thrilled to get phone service in five minutes rather than six months. Stein Ph.D. is associate director of human resources at the Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York City. Last year she attended an art opening at Tribeca Gallery and Frame, which is run by Madelyn Russo Jordon and partner on Hudson Street in the City. They’ve been selling fine art and doing custom framing there since the fall of 1991. Cynthia Ward Stevens is a self-employed management consultant and trainer in Washington, DC, where husband Roger is president of the National Center for Housing Management. Stephanie Kearns Angelo is executive director of the Federal Defender Program in Atlanta, GA. Husband Daniel is an attorney. Leslie Hammond Coil led a discussion group for the class at our 20-year reunion last June. Out of that discussion came some very interesting realizations about ourselves as individuals and as a group. After a two-year stint in the DC area, they are currently living in Gales Ferry, CT, while Dave is assigned by the Navy to the submarine base at New London. Louise Harris Emerson is an artist and also the owner of the Raku Grille, located in the resort town of Neskowin, OR. Louise Wright has joined the Kalamazoo, Ml, office of the law firm of Miller, Canfield, Paddock and Stone, where she is involved in local and national commercial litigation matters. Louise graduated from law school at Wayne State University in 1990, and prior to that from Columbia University School of Nursing, with honors. Denise Birchell Kilmer continued her education by attending Rochester Institute of Technology, receiving an M.F.A. in photography. It was there she met her husband, Geoffrey. In 1986 they opened their own photography business, Photoworks, in Charlottesville, VA. Their business is both a retail and commercial lab and studio. Denise and Geoffrey live in the Blue Ridge Mountains with their children, Elizabeth and Benjamin. Susanne Littleton is the aquatic director at the YWCA in Manchester, NH. Husband William Fournier is general manager of food services for ARA Services in Philadelphia. Sharon Hendry Healey and husband Bob have been living in Chattanooga, TN, for the past six years — five of those with daughter Caitlin. Sharon has been able to stay home with her daughter, but ponders the idea of returning to work as Caitlin heads to kindergarten. Sharon thinks of Skidmore often and longs for those “carefree” days. Wouldn’t it be nice to step back in time? Leonora Lorenzo has her own business in Santa Fe, NM, called the Body-Mind Connection, where she works as a body-centered psychotherapist. Leonora was married twice last summer — once in Connecticut and once in Santa Fe. To the same husband — Bruce Berlin! “Muzzy” Cleveland ’78 was in the Connecticut wedding, and Katherine Tobin ’72, former director of career planning at Skidmore, was in the Santa Fe celebration. Gary Kuch and Ellen Tillapaugh 17 recently had a visit from Andy Burling ’75, who they hadn’t seen in quite a while. Seems some records indicated they were divorced, but they report they are very happy (and together) in Cooperstown, NY, restoring their antique house and raising two daughters, Maggie, six, and Rachael, three. They’d love to hear from classmates, and they encourage folks to look them up if they are in the area. Becky Broers has been elected to the board of directors of Lintas: New York. Becky helped lead the team that enabled Diet Coke and Lintas to win three prestigious EFFIE Awards and earn Advertising Age/s “Brand of the Decade.” She was also instrumental in the launch of caffeine-free Diet Coke. James Mandle continues to work for his master’s degree in architecture at the University of Oregon.
