Ginger currently has a job as a patient representative at Children's Hospital National Medical Center in Washington and loves "the opportunity to focus my interests in one area doing something I enjoy immensely." 61 Helen Illingworth Challenger 1759 Wilder Court Dunwoody, GA 30338 Zelda Jacobson Schwartz is ensconced in her life as a family therapist and supervisor of the Southern Worcester County Educational Collaborative. She discussed the importance of female friendship during a two-day "Issues and Images: A Women's Symposium” held at the Worcester (MA) Jewish Community Center in March of this year. Zelda's daughter Liz is at Bowdoin College; Suzanne will enter Amherst College in the fall and Karen is in high school at Worcester Academy. Zelda and Paul have purchased a home in Ogunquit, ME, for use as a hideaway in all seasons, but they like it most in the wintertime. Sonja Bernt Showalter, after the death of her 18-year-old son from cancer and a recent divorce, has moved to Denver, CO, with her daughter Winther. Sonja is working full time as a registered nurse in pediatric immunology. Many of her patients are chronic asthmatics who are hospitalized for six weeks at a time. During their stay she works closely with parents and children, teaching them about their condition and how best to treat and live with it. Her experiences with raising handicapped children, coping with the death of a child and even her divorce has helped her relate to them in her teaching. How fortunate it is that even painful life experiences can be put to positive use. Sonja has found a wonderful handicapped skiing program in Winterpark where her daughter can ride up the slopes in a skimobile and then ski down on a frame walker mounted on skis. In the summer Winther participates in the special rafting program. Sonja’s daughter Ingrid married a U.V.A. Law School graduate and is living in Birmingham, AL. Her son Nelson continues to live in Roanoke with his father. On May 16, 1987, Sonja married Dr. James F. Jones, a pediatric immunologist. 63 Connie Talcott Smith 301 NW 35th Street Boca Raton, FL 33433 Hi ’63ers! Clip this column! Save it (in your '63 yearbook) so you can refresh your memory on everybody's doings while enroute to our 25th reunion in 1988! The following responded to my newsletter and I loved hearing from you. Pat Lee Michener is dean of students at the Holton Arms School in Bethesda, MD. She has passed on math abilities to the eldest of her three sons, an aerospace engineering student at VA Tech. Jane Finneman Hochman, Ed.D. has returned from a year in London and is living in New Brunswick, NJ. She is an educational consultant specializing in early intervention. Susan Altus Rudnick reports from Sudbury, MA, that older son David is a student at Harvard. She is teaching religious education twice a week and is president-elect of the Southern New England Region of Hadassah. Jackie Fernald Montgomery is celebrating 11 years in beautiful Jackson Hole, WY, seven years of marriage to Jack, and two years of motherhood to toddler Geoffrey! She still keeps active in her real estate practice, but young Geoffrey has had an impact, timewise. Judy Pettingell Harris and family have recently moved to Hanover, NH, where Richard is chief operating officer of the Dartmouth Hitchcock Clinic, Their boys are ages 8 and 11. She would love to hear from Skidmore alumni in the area...or '63ers bringing their offspring to Dartmouth. Sandy Wilbert Fleischman and husband-veterinarian Robert continue to operate their small animal hospital in Northborough, MA. She is interested in bringing the joy of pets to people in institutions — super “day brightened” Apologies to Joan Layng Dayton whose Skidmore freshman Toby is a son, not a daughter as reported in my newsletter. She and Bob (on the Carleton College Board of Trustees) hosted a dinner in Minneapolis for Carleton Acting President and Skidmore’s President-elect David Porter in February. Carleton's loss is our very big gain. In the short time remaining of his Carleton tenure, the college has named him their eighth president, a real honor for a departing interim administrator. Dr. Porter will be inaugurated in September as Skidmore’s fifth president, and will be on hand to greet us at reunion 1988. Dorothy Skripak Penner's husband Vernon is currently serving as ambassador to the Republic of Cape Verde, an island country 400 miles off the coast of West Africa. Join me in wishing Dorothy a well-deserved leave in time for reunion. Wendy Sussman Rubin will soon join the ranks of Skidmore parents as Vickie enters with the class of '91! Susan Blum Loukedis reports that her daughter, Lisa Liftman, graduated from Skidmore in May. Some of you will hear from Susan as she is on the class leadership committee. “Skidmore is better than ever," she says, and I agree! Ginger and her third daughter biked 1300 miles last summer, along with 10 of Laura's junior high classmates, to Glacier Park and Jasper — Alberta, no less! Bet she could still model for Mademoiselle! Look for Ginger at reunion '88 and read on for more great legs in the class of 63. Ilona Barkocy Shorb reports from Phoenix that she keeps in shape with running, excercise classes, and tennis. She accompanies Stan when he takes his ophthalmology practice abroad in occasional service to third world countries. Ilona saw Suzanne Henning Metzger while skiing in Colorado this winter. Stephanie recently had a major exhibition of her paintings and works on paper at the Moss/Chumley Gallery in Dallas where critic Bruce Nixon of the Dallas Times Herald wrote: “Stephanie Rose portrays a world in which dreams run free. Her pictures tend to be quite large — some are wall-sized — and they are bursting with an urgent, eccentric array of flowering colors and strange, near-abstract imagery as well as a feeling of lifelike energy.” Stephanie has also been guest critic and lecturer at the University of Dallas; Bennington College; Otis Art Institute, Los Angeles; and Altos de Chavon, Dominican Republic.
