The Vermont Federation of Republican Women presented the award at their seventh “Speak Easy” held at the Shelburne Museum in Shelburne, VT, on October 8, 1984. Guest speaker was Maureen Reagan, daughter of President Ronald Reagan. Alice Ortgies Dusinberre reports that in June of this year, in Dallas, TX, their daughter, Sara D. Knapp, was presented “The Isadore Gilbert Mudge Citation" for distinguished contributions to reference Iibrarianship by the Reference and Adult Services Division of the American Library Association. The citation refers to her pioneering role in the introduction of computerized information retrieval services, and her many other accomplishments. 28 Mary Roberts Teare 45 Goode Street Burnt Hills, NY 12027 Our deepest sympathy to Connie Goodwin Cheney, whose beloved husband Harold (Todd) passed away on May 18, 1984 following a stroke. 31 Jean Tyre Mason Box 300 - RR#2 Perkasie, PA 18944 Beatrice Kirsch wrote to inform us that she was married again on October 19, 1984, to Hy Newmark, poet and writer. Van Nest, died September 21, 1984, after a long illness. He had worked for 48 years as a fire insurance examiner for Continental Insurance Company. Besides Marion, he is also survived by a daughter and two grandchildren. 35 Elizabeth Norlander Newell 15 Deane Avenue Holden, MA 01520 Sincerest sympathy is extended to Edith Latcher Smith whose husband, Sidney, passed away on October 4, 1984. He was a retired mechanical engineer. Two children also survive. We also extend sympathy to Harriet Rublee Pond whose husband, Addison C. Pond, died on September 13, 1984. Addison was retired senior vice president of Onondaga Savings Bank. He was, for many years, an economics professor at Colby College in Maine and the University of Vermont, and was vice president of finance for 20 years with National Life Insurance Company of Montpelier, VT. Besides his wife Harriet, Addison is survived by three daughters, two sons, a sister and a brother as well as six grandchildren. 36 Lucille Hogan Burkhardt Rosewood Lane, Box 278 Central Valley, NY 10917 Virginia Sturz Hare wrote in mid-May that she is continuing as ibrarian at the Masters School this year. 39 Charlotte Appelbaum Lanzit 515 Laramie Trail Cincinnati, OH 45215 The Class is saddened to learn of the death of Elizabeth Shearer Ketchum in a nursing home in Saratoga last summer, after a long illness. For many years she managed a yarn shop in Saratoga and was active in the Zonta Club. Elizabeth is survived by her husband, James Ketchum, and expressions of sympathy may be extended to him at 24 Crommelin Drive, Saratoga Springs, NY 12866. She is also survived by two daughters, Mrs. Barbara Rowland of Saratoga and Mrs. Elizabeth Heinsen of Rutland, VT; a sister, Mrs. Helen Doberstein, Keene, NH, and two grandchildren. EDITOR'S NOTE: In the April 1983 issue of SCOPE, Charlotte Appelbaum Lanzit reported the exciting news that a letter she had written to TIME Magazine commenting on their selection of a computer as “Man of the Year” would be published in their January 24,1983 issue. It develops that her letter, which was indeed published in the issue, was one they later in the year wanted to use as sample writing for a unit entitled “Writing Exercises.” We assume she gave them permission. She is presently Director of Volunteer Services for Physicians for Social Responsibility in New York. Do Dunkel Jerman is now Mrs. Harry Menconi. She mentioned that all the children came from far and wide to be part of the ceremony on July 13th, 1984 — from Morocco, Bahamas, Chicago and Palo Alto. However, Phyl Harder Reininger and I know we have a difficult role to follow in the footsteps of our past officers, Leah and Evie. Ginnie Birks Alexander is working as an Interior Designer and living in Vancouver, BC with husband Michael Jonathan Brandell who is in the printing business. Their two children attend Queens University. Esther Griffing Joseph will give a workshop on Pet Therapy at The Canadian Group Psychotherapy Conference in Ottawa in October. Esther is a psychotherapist who works with children and senior citizens, using her dog “Tiny” as a co-therapist. Dib Bazelon Miller moved to Johannesburg, South Africa with Brad for two years just before Reunion. Dori Higgons Popenoe is an Artist Educational Aide working for Pawnee School and World Book. Husband Pete does group pension work for Marsh and McLennan Association. Helen Buch Thorpe is the owner of a Gymboree franchise for all of Northern New Jersey. Her family is scattered about the country. Marjorie "Pudge" White Williams was very busy reunion weekend setting up her exhibit of sculpturing at the Visual Arts Gallery in Cobleskill, NY Public Library for the month of June. Susan, whose Upstairs Downstairs gallery features the country’s leading artists, has launched an exhibit entitled “Jamaican Legends in Dance.” A National Heritage Chess Set in a limited edition was designed by Susan, herself, and features sixteen legendary figures portrayed by the National Dance Theatre Company of Jamaica. A preview of the “Heritage ’84-Legends", paintings, sculpture and ceramics from Jamaica’s leading artists, was held on October 7. Kenneth R. Manning a distinguished professor, writer and historian from M.I.T., was guest speaker. Nancy Sweeny Hutchins writes that she and husband John own a machine repairing and rebuilding business. Their three sons are also employed there. In addition, the couple own and rent a year-round vacation home in the Berkshires (a hint, if anyone is interested). Nancy works for the Connecticut State Department of Health Services as a Community Nursing Program Consultant. A note from Barbara Tyson Hartman announces husband Ralph is planning retirement from the banking business and they are planning travel in their RV. She adds that the Skidmore Chorus used to perform her mother’s musical compositions at Sea Moods, and that a chorus in Clifton Park does her music now. Ginger Morgan Travis writes that she is still working part time at the laboratory at Doctors Hospital in Dallas. Floridian Nancy Kunhardt Adams is selling real estate in Sarasota and running a singles group as well. Joan Kreuser Noone writes that the move from Ohio to Rhode Island was great but that sadness hit when their three-month-old grandson died of SDSthis summer. Another Rorida resident, Suzanne MacWatty Morris, is putting her life back together after the death of her husband Harry, as is Caroline Willard Clark, whose husband Ronald died last March 2nd while skiing. Ron was a civil engineer in Buffalo and VP of Siegfried Construction Company. We were all sorry, too, to learn of the death of Jane Roberts Butts. It was nice to know a famous author. 52 Sylvia Heberling Predale 21 White Oak Drive Colts Neck, NJ 07722 Betty Alderman Scott and her husband Stan built an energy-efficient home in Woodbridge, CT three years ago, and now use their energy to efficiently heat it by shoveling coal. Betty teaches a Family Life course at Amity High School. If anyone reading this is doing the same, she would love to Network. Dawn Staples Davidson’s Interior Design business is booming. She redecorated the New Haven Country Club this spring, a job which included furniture design as well as selecting all new furnishings. Dawn taught a course in historic textiles at Paier College of Art during the spring semester. She studied in Paris with Parsons in 1982, learning French architecture and decorative arts from the Renaissance to the present. Dawn’s son Charles, Skidmore ’81, is a graphic designer in Saratoga Springs, NY. Jewel Bode Suchecki reported the death of her husband Stanley on August 4 of this year. He was Senior Editor and Associate Publisher for the W.R.C. Smith Publishing Company. Stanley is also survived by two sons, Peter and Karl. Peggy McConnell Hinrichs is working with her husband John who is President of a consulting firm in Darien. Cynthia Hartwig Gyorgy is working part time as a nursery school teacher and is still happily living in Readfield, ME. 53 Elinor Reponen Cronin 10 Norman Road Melrose, MA 02176 Janet Danziger Weinstein writes that she is working as a Mental Health Counselor at East Orange General Hospital and recently moved into a Cape Cod house in Cranford, NJ with daughter Bonnie. Audrey Uhlmann Rosenheim reports that she is teaching pre-school, and says that her family leans toward education and the arts. Two of their five children are Skidmore graduates. Jill '76 teaches English as a second language for National College in Chicago and is also a ceramist who has been in several shows. Nancy 78 isan artist in NYC. Daughter Julie taught emotionally disturbed children for two years and Gail is a professional ballet dancer and a principal with Marcia Tallchief’s Chicago City Ballet Company. Bascha Mon (Bobbi Grub man) has been awarded a grant to continue her painting and develop new techniques in drawing and Printmaking. The grant money is awarded each year by the New Jersey State Commission on the Arts. Lynn is responsible for all public relations activities and for directing a corps of 200active volunteers at the 240-bed non-profit geriatric facility. Long active in the Stamford community, Lynn is a member of the Jewish Community Center's Executive Committee; the Board of Directors of Stamford Economic Assistance Corporation; the Stamford Symphony; the Family and Children's Services; the Low-Heywood Thomas Parents Association; and the Management Committee of Liberation Programs, Inc. For the past eight years, she has served as Vice-Chairman of Stamford’s Board of Finance. Commissions include a commemorative plate in honor of Governor Hugh L. Carey, and work for offices designed by one of New York’s leading architect-designers. Husband Scott is a lawyer in Great Neck, NY. 65 Lenore Bethka Wersten 52 Canterbury Road Clifton Park, NY 12065 Ruth "Bonnie" Bishop of Athens, ME, has been appointed Director of Publications at Colby, brining to that institution 17 years of graphic arts experience. She worked at Scholastic Magazines/Books from 1966 to 1976 as an artist, art editor, and art director of language arts products. Bonnie has written and illustrated children’s books, and has worked with some of New York’s established artists. Several of her posters have received national acclaim and she has presented graphics shows in both New York and Maine. She has also taught courses in display at Thomas College in Waterville, ME. Suzanne Conrad Zissu completed her training in psychoanalysis this year and is currently practicing full time, both psychotherapy and psychoanalysis, in Manhattan. Gail Schultz Lozier has been working as a volunteer for WNET/Channel 13, hoping to find a salaried position she will enjoy as much. Hecker; her husband, Milton Pereira; and daughter, Katherine Pereira. 68 Molly Meyer 33 Livingston Street New Haven, CT 06511 Judith Oehler, a blindness consultant in Bedford, NY, was married on August 20, 1984 to Robert M. Carrigan, Jr., Director of Financial Analysis and Planning for General Mills in New York City. The couple had originally dated in 1969 before Judith lost her vision. In September 1982, he was reading in the Boston University Alumni Magazine about individuals nominated to receive the distinguished alumni award and saw her photograph. He tracked her down through the alumni office in Milwaukee, Wl where she was teaching as an Assistant Professor in the School of Nursing, U. of Wisconsin, and had a long distance romance after a wonderful reunion in Boston where she received the award. Several Skidmore classmates and friends attended the ceremony in St. Paul, MN, Judith’s hometown. Judith is a consultant, part time, for Barnum-Secunda Advertising Co., assisting them with publicity for a new blood glucose analyzer for blind diabetics. She and Robert were to be filmed demonstrating it at their house for the PBS series, “New Tech News," on August 29 for broadcast in October. Judith was to be interviewed in October on TV, radio and by newspapers in the Boston area. Both Judith and Susan Necarsulmer Dallin 70, who lives nearby, are active in the Bedford, NY Junior League.
