Description
A multiple-witnessed document detailing Patrick Auld's leasing (sasine) of land at Torbane Hill, Mid Lothian (formerly Stirlingshire), Scotland to John Bell and his daughter Agnes Bell on September 4, 1698. Witnesses included James Bryce of Cutle (Cuthill), John Beugo of Auchenhard (Auchinhard), and James Dunlop of Foulshiels. John Mershell of Stannieburn (Stonyburn) is Baillie.
The document has a Latin summary (bottom right hand corner, recto). On the verso, there is a 4-line note that the sasine was recorded in an Edinburgh register in October 1698 by Sir John Foulis, clerk and keeper of the registry.

Donated by Patricia-Ann Lee, emerita professor of History, these legal documents, dating from the 16th-18th centuries and written on parchment and rag paper, record grants of property to individuals and groups in Great Britain.
Beginning in the fall of 2022, students from Jordana Dym’s “Archival Storytelling” class set out to transcribe this and other documents in the collection, learning Secretary Hand in the process, and have prepared updated cataloging information (now reflected in this record) in a process that is ongoing.
