Description
Original German was edited by La Motte Fouqué. Translated by Sir John Bowring. This edition is known to exist in three states. State 1 has the date 1823 on the t.p.; state 2 has date changed to 1824 and publisher's address on t.p. is hyphenated: Ave-Maria Lane; state 3 has t.p. dated 1824 and the address has no hyphen. Cruikshank's name is misspelled "Cruickshank" and p. [ix], lines 4-5 has misspelling "aukwardness" for "awkwardness" in all three states, but both were corrected for the 2nd edition, published later in 1824. Cf. Cohn.
