Skid News Sports Men’s Lax Falls To 1-2 Despite Talent by David Mather Entering last week with a record of 1-0, the men's lacrosse team stumbled in the fourth quarter of one game and never got on track in the other. In the process, the team was outscored 7-1 in the fourth quarters of both games, dropping its record to 1-2. The first victory of the season came on Saturday, March 30 against Vassar. The overmatched Brewers were blown off Wagner field, 16-6. The Thoroughbreds jumped out to a 6-0 lead and never looked back, truly controlling the game from start to finish. Skidmore was led by Ben Boyd, who had four goals and two assists. Hamilton was Skidmore's next opponent in the second of only four home games for the Thoroughbreds this season. After two goals by Eric Johnson took Skidmore in front, 2-1, Hamilton answered back and ended the first quarter with a 4-2 lead. In the second quarter, two Michael Sheward assists led to a 5-5 tie by the quarter's end. The first of Sheward's assists came three minutes into the second as he found Johnson cutting to the net for the third of his four goals. Four minutes later, Sheward spotted Steven Feldman in front of the goal, which tied the game at four apiece. The second half was not to be a productive one for Skidmore. After Hamilton made it 6-5 to start the third, Feldman put in his second goal of the game to tie it once again. Then the flood gates opened. After being able to tie the game on three different occasions, the Thoroughbreds went the next 21 minutes without a goal. At the same time, they watched six Hamilton goals pass between the pipes. When asked about the fourth quarter collapse, Sheward said, "We practically played the whole quarter a man down, and just couldn't make anything happen." After being in the game the whole time, and down only 7-6 at the end of three, it was a frustrating loss for Skidmore. Unfortunately, Saturday's game at Pace didn't help ease the pain of Thursday's loss. Trailing 7-2 at the half, the Thoroughbreds couldn't get closer than 8-4, and eventually lost 10-5. "It was a game we should have won," Boyd said frankly. Five players each had a goal for Skidmore: Johnson, with his team-high ninth of the season, Feldman, with his sixth, and Oliver Davis, Shaker Khayatt and Ellery Griscom had one apiece. Sheward got his eighth and ninth assists of the year. The Thoroughbreds play at home today against RPI, and Saturday at Manhattanville. With limited playing time before the tournament and a top quality field, including only division one and two schools other than Skidmore, the team's goals were to play the best it could and begin to prepare for the national tournament in June. Due to the poor conditions of the West Point course, the first day was shortened to only 18 holes. The tough conditions and rust showed on the first day as Skidmore finished fifteenth out of twenty teams. Dan Goldstein and Dave Wetzstein were low with a pair of solid 76s, and Brion After was next with a 77. With the nice weather and improving conditions on Saturday, the team seemed rejuvenated and improved play looked probable. Skidmore showed advancement toward midseason form as it improved 15 shots and bolted into the top ten. Goldstein again led the way with a hard fought 74 to finish with a team low, two day total of 150. Matt Ray led a group of 76' that included Dave Hathaway and After, as he scorched the back nine for a two under 33. Captain Bill Rosenblum was next with a 77. Skidmore's next tournament is April 12 and 13 at the Yale golf course in Connecticut.
