Skidmore News, Feb. 15, Page 13 Sports Men’s Tennis Team The Skidmore College Mens’ Tennis Team will begin practice at 4:00 pm on Tuesday, February 14, at the Saratoga Racquet Club according to Coach Rod Whalen. Practice will be held at the Club from 4:00 until 5:00 pm Tuesdays through Fridays beginning February 14 and lasting until Spring break. After Spring break, practice will be at Skidmore College. Members of the Spring and Fall 1983 teams are asked to report to the Saratoga Racquet Club at the above times. Inasmuch as tryouts were held in September, 1983, there will be no general tryout sessions. Freshmen and transfer students unable to try out in the Fall may report to Coach Whalen the first day of practice. Expected to report from last year’s All-Conference and All-District team are Roger Stein, Jr., Scarsdale, All-Conference and All-District; Jim Coleman, Jr., New York City, All-District; John Levinson, Sophomore, New York City, All-Conference; Brad Smith, Sophomore, Lancaster, PA, All-Conference; 1984 Team Captain Seth Bekenstein, Senior, New York City, All-Conference; Bob Erickson, Sophomore, Arlington, MA, All-Conference; and 1983 Team Captain Mike Bucar, Senior, Marion, MA, 1982 All-Conference; Tim Prince, Freshman, Australia; George Phear, Sophomore, Cambridge, MA; Bill Balter, Junior, New York City; Olivier Kirmser, Sophomore, Paris, France; Steve Rexford, Freshman, Westport, CT; and Oren Safdie, Freshman, Montreal, Canada. Stein, Coleman, Levinson, Bekenstein and Erickson competed in the NAIA National Championships last Spring in Kansas City, MO. During pre-season practice, the team will work out against teams from North Adams State and Adirondack Community College. The Spring schedule is as follows: March 31, Albany State; April 7 at Hartwick; April 10, Utica; April 13, Vassar; April 16 at Bard; April 19, Union; April 21, RPI; April 24 at Franklin Pierce; April 25 at Siena; April 28. Mayflower Conference Championships at New England College; May 1 at Marist; May 3, Oneonta State; May 5, NAIA District Championships (site to be announced); and May 7, New Paltz State. This Week in Sports from the Sports Information Center Men’s Basketball Coach Glenn Begly’s hoopsters recorded a 2-1 week with home victories over Bard (Feb. 1) and College of St. Rose (Feb. 6) and a loss to Roger Williams (Feb. 4). Junior Mark Jones led the Thoroughbreds with 17 points and 10 rebounds in the Bard contest. Skidmore traveled to Roger Williams and brought home an 80-71 loss. Junior co-captain Jim Taggart led the offense with 18 points and freshman Kevin Barry was leading rebounder with 11 boards. Fast-breaking junior Jerry Rickrode paced the Thoroughbreds with 20 points in the 84-62 win over St. Rose. Barry was once again board leader with 13 rebounds. Men’s Ice Hockey Curry College netted a goal at the 9:21 mark of the third period to ice a 4-3 win over Skidmore (Feb. 4) at the Saratoga Ice Hockey Rink. Senior Brian Casl led the Thoroughbreds with two goals while senior tri-captain Terry Fina picked up two assists. Women’s Basketball Coach Linda Stonecipher’s hoop team posted a 1-1 week on its home court. North Adams state handed the Thoroughbreds a 54-47 loss (Feb. 2). Junior Tanya Fernandez was Skidmore’s high-scorer with 10 points. Senior captain Kim Murphy tallied 19 points in Skidmore’s 68-55 win over Middlebury (Feb. 4). Freshman Lisa Randall grabbed 10 boards to lead all rebounders. Women’s Ice Hockey Coach Jay Holcomb’s skaters were shut-out by Middlebury 4-0 (Feb. 2). Senior co-captain Rachel Finn turned away 37 shots while in the net for Skidmore. Holcomb praised the play of senior co-captain and defenseman Anne Babington. “Her superior conditioning allowed her to play longer than any player I have coached,” Holcomb said. “She probably played 40 of the 45 minutes.” Women’s Swimming Junior Marnie Moore won four events to pace Skidmore in its 85-54 defeat of Union(Feb. 1). Moore placed first in the 50-yard freestyle, 100-yard freestyle, and 50-yard butterfly events. She also was a member of the winning 200-yard freestyle relay team. Senior co-captain Sue Butler had another solid meet with three first-place finishes. She was tops in the 500-yard and 1,000-yard freestyle events and also was a member of the winning 200-yard freestyle team.
